Quick roll recipes can be made from scratch or adapted from ready-made ones. Just because they are “quick” doesn’t mean that they are bad, as there are many quick roll recipes which are loved all over the world. The problem is not so much the “quickness” of the roll itself, but the storage of the bread. Just add regular yeast to these quick roll recipes and all other bread recipes as well.
Use The Right Ingredients
The key to quick bread rolls is to use the right ingredients, to make sure you use the right amount of each ingredient, and to coat the bread with vegetable oil prior to baking. In fact, this is the secret tip that experts use. Use egg yolk in place of oil, if you are substituting the vegetable oil with egg yolk. Using egg yolk will prevent the bread from drying out and makes it rise faster – something which the oil cannot do.
The basic ingredients for a quick roll recipe which is satisfactory for most people are the flour, yeast, and butter. Flour should be mixed with water according to the package directions. Next, place the yeast in a small bowl and add the warm water in your Dutch oven. Make sure the yeast is moistened with the water before adding it to the other ingredients. This will allow the yeast to rise and expand properly, resulting in a crispy outside and a soft interior.
Quick bread recipes are usually seasoned with garlic, onions, and seasonings such as thyme, Rosemary, or even bacon drippings. Most recipes call for brown sugar, however brown sugar may be substituted for honey, molasses, maple syrup, or even molasses. If you add raisins or dried fruits to the mix, the recipe will taste a bit more like a real cake, but be careful not to overdo it by overpowering the cake-like flavor with the raisins. In fact, the yeast may release its delicious bread-like flavor if the ingredients are too strong.
Combine The Dry Ingredients
To make your own quick roll recipe, all you need to do is combine the dry ingredients together and then knead the mixture a bit. Knead the dough for about five minutes until the ingredients are fully mixed. Form the dough into a ball and place into a greased cookie sheet. Bake the homemade yeast dinner rolls as directed and let cool on a wire cooling rack. Once the roll is completely cooled, cover with waxed paper and let dry. Store in an air-tight plastic bag.
When preparing the recipe, you can increase the cooking time by up to one and a half hours. If using a yeast recipe, the baking time will be different depending on the brand and type of yeast used. For this reason, you should experiment with a small batch to find out the baking time. If using store bought yeast, check the ingredients to determine the right amount of time required.
If desired, add some vanilla or cinnamon extract to the batter as well as any other ingredients that are suggested in the recipe. Form the cooled and formed bread rolls into a tray and let sit for approximately two hours before baking. Remove the rolls from the oven and allow them to cool completely before frosting. Frost the rolls with icing and pop into the oven. Quick roll recipes without yeast are usually best enjoyed at the holidays, but homemade bread rolls with yeast are also great recipes for the week.
